Developments in Syria and Their Impact on the Turkish Labour Market Discussed at the National Tripartite Consultation Platform
An event titled “National Tripartite Consultation: Developments in Syria and Their Impact on the Labour Market in Türkiye” was held in Ankara on 13 May 2025 under the coordination of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Office for Türkiye.
Representatives from the government, employers, and workers, as well as international organizations such as the ILO and UNHCR, participated in the event. The opening speeches were delivered by Ali Aybey, Director General for Foreign Relations and European Union; Yasser Hassan, Director of the ILO Office for Türkiye; and Babatunde Ahonsi, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Türkiye.
The participants discussed the recent developments in Syria and their multifaceted impacts on the Turkish labour market. The situation of Syrians under Temporary Protection, who prefer to return to their country or stay in Türkiye, was evaluated from both economic and social perspectives. Representatives shared their observations and assessments from the viewpoint of their respective institutions.
Representatives from TÜRK-İŞ, HAK-İŞ, DİSK, TİSK, and TESK actively contributed to the event on behalf of workers and employers. The effects of Syrians on the national economy and labour market were addressed in detail. One of the main agenda items was the identification of existing opportunities and challenges regarding the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of these individuals to Syria.
It is envisaged that the issues discussed on the national tripartite consultation platform and the outcomes of the meeting will provide important contributions to the Regional Tripartite Consultation Meeting, which is planned to be held with the participation of representatives of neighboring countries to Syria in the upcoming period.
